One second you’re relaxing with a glass of red wine. The next, you’re staring at a large red splash across your sofa.
Your immediate instinct might be to grab the nearest cleaning spray and start scrubbing.
Don’t.
What you do in the first few minutes after spilling red wine on upholstery can make a significant difference to the eventual result.
So, if you’ve just spilled red wine on your sofa, here’s what you should — and shouldn’t — do.
First: Don’t Panic
Red wine looks dramatic, particularly on pale upholstery, but a fresh wine spill doesn’t automatically mean your sofa is ruined.
The important thing is to act sensibly rather than aggressively.
The aim initially is to remove as much excess liquid as possible without spreading the wine or damaging the fabric.
Step 1: Blot the Wine Immediately
Take a clean, absorbent white cloth or towel and gently blot the affected area.
Why white?
Because you don’t want colour from a dyed cloth potentially transferring onto wet upholstery and creating another problem.
Apply gentle pressure to absorb the liquid.
Change to a clean section of the cloth as it absorbs the wine and continue blotting.
Step 2: Don’t Rub or Scrub
This is probably the most important thing to remember.
Blot — don’t rub.
Aggressive rubbing can spread the wine across a larger area and work it further into the upholstery.
It may also disturb or damage the surface fibres.
You’re trying to lift moisture away from the sofa, not scrub the stain deeper into it.
Step 3: Don’t Flood the Sofa with Water
It can be tempting to pour water onto the stain to dilute the wine.
Be careful.
Upholstery isn’t simply a piece of fabric sitting on a hard surface. Beneath it may be padding, foam and other absorbent materials.
Excess liquid can penetrate deeper into the furniture and spread contamination beyond the original spill.
Over-wetting can also contribute to water marks, prolonged drying and other problems.
What About Salt?
Putting salt on spilled red wine is one of those pieces of household advice that’s been repeated for years.
But your sofa isn’t a tablecloth.
Different upholstery materials respond differently to moisture and treatment, and covering the area with household products can complicate subsequent professional stain removal.
When dealing with valuable furniture or an unknown fabric, the safer approach is usually to remove excess liquid and seek appropriate advice.
What About White Wine?
Another famous piece of advice is to pour white wine over red wine.
We wouldn’t recommend turning one glass of wine on your sofa into two.
Adding more liquid increases the amount of moisture entering the upholstery and introduces another substance that then needs removing.
Should I Use Washing-Up Liquid?
Washing-up liquid is designed for dishes, not necessarily upholstery.
Using too much can leave detergent residue behind within the fabric.
That residue may be difficult to rinse completely from furniture and can potentially attract dirt afterwards.
The same principle applies to laundry products and other general household detergents.
Can I Use a Supermarket Stain Remover?
Only if you’re confident that the product is appropriate for your specific upholstery and you’re following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Sofas can be made from a huge range of fibres and blends.
A product being labelled as a stain remover doesn’t automatically mean it’s suitable for every upholstery fabric.
If the sofa is valuable, delicate or you’re unsure about the material, professional advice is the safer option.
Why Is Red Wine Difficult to Remove?
Red wine contains strongly coloured compounds capable of leaving visible staining within fibres.
How easily the stain can be treated depends on several factors:
- Fabric type
- Fabric colour
- How much wine was spilled
- How deeply it penetrated
- How quickly it was treated
- Previous cleaning products used
- Age of the stain
That’s why two apparently identical wine spills can produce very different results.
What If the Wine Stain Has Already Dried?
Don’t assume it’s too late.
Professional stain treatment may still be able to remove or significantly improve an older red wine stain.
However, dried stains can be more challenging than fresh spills.
If you’ve already attempted to clean it, tell your professional cleaner what products you’ve used.
That information can be useful when deciding how to proceed.
Can Professional Upholstery Cleaning Remove Red Wine?
Professional cleaners can treat many wine stains successfully, but complete removal can’t responsibly be guaranteed in every situation.
The upholstery should first be assessed to understand the fabric and determine an appropriate treatment.
The aim is not simply to use the strongest chemical available.
It’s to achieve the best possible stain removal while protecting the upholstery itself.
Should I Have the Whole Sofa Cleaned?
That depends on the condition of the furniture.
If the sofa is otherwise clean and the spill is very localised, targeted treatment may be appropriate.
However, if the sofa hasn’t been professionally cleaned for years, treating one area may highlight how dirty the surrounding upholstery has gradually become.
A complete clean may therefore provide a more consistent overall result.
The Quick Red Wine Emergency Checklist
If you’ve just spilled red wine on your sofa:
DO:
- Act quickly
- Use a clean white absorbent cloth
- Blot gently
- Work carefully
- Seek professional advice if necessary
DON’T:
- Scrub aggressively
- Saturate the sofa
- Start mixing cleaning products
- Pour white wine over it
- Assume stronger chemicals mean better results

The less you do incorrectly in those first few minutes, the better position your professional cleaner may have to work from.
