We love our pets, but even the best-behaved dog or cat can have the occasional accident. Unfortunately, when that accident happens on a sofa or rug, getting rid of the smell can be much harder than simply cleaning what you can see.

One of the most common questions we’re asked is: can professional cleaning remove pet urine smells from sofas and rugs?

In many cases, professional cleaning can significantly reduce or completely remove pet urine stains and odours. However, the result depends on several factors, including the material, how much urine has penetrated it, how long it has been there, and whether any cleaning products have already been used.

Here’s why pet urine can be so difficult to deal with — and what can be done about it.

Why Does Pet Urine Smell So Strongly?

A fresh pet accident might initially seem relatively straightforward to clean. You blot the area, use a household cleaner and everything appears fine.

Then the smell comes back.

The problem is that urine doesn’t necessarily remain on the surface.

On a sofa, liquid can penetrate beyond the upholstery fabric into the padding, foam and other materials underneath. With a rug, it can pass through the fibres into the foundation or backing.

As the urine dries, residues remain behind. Moisture and humidity can make these odours noticeable again, which is why a sofa or rug can appear clean but continue to smell.

Simply masking the odour with a fragranced product doesn’t address the source.

Why Household Cleaning Doesn’t Always Work

There are plenty of supermarket products and online cleaning remedies promising to tackle pet accidents.

Some may help with minor fresh accidents, but there are several reasons DIY treatment can struggle with established urine contamination.

The urine may have travelled deeper than the cleaner

Cleaning the visible surface doesn’t necessarily reach contamination underneath.

Too much water can spread the problem

Saturating an area can push contamination further into upholstery fillings or spread it across a larger section of a rug.

The wrong product can damage the material

Different fibres, fabrics and dyes react differently to cleaning chemicals. A product that works perfectly well on one material could cause discolouration or damage to another.

The smell may only have been masked

Strong fragrances can temporarily overpower an odour without removing its source. Once the fragrance disappears, the original smell returns.

This is why repeated spraying doesn’t always solve the problem.

Can Professional Cleaning Remove Pet Urine from a Sofa?

Professional upholstery cleaning allows the problem to be approached differently.

Before cleaning begins, the upholstery should be assessed to determine the fabric type, condition and appropriate cleaning method.

Treatment can then be targeted towards both the visible staining and the source of the odour.

Depending on the circumstances, professional cleaning may help with:

  • Urine staining
  • Unpleasant pet odours
  • General pet smells
  • Dirt and body oils
  • Pet hair and dander
  • Mud and everyday contamination

The sooner an accident is dealt with, the better the chances of achieving a good result.

However, if urine has repeatedly soaked deeply into foam or internal furniture components, cleaning the surface fabric alone may not always completely resolve severe contamination.

A reputable cleaner should be realistic about what can be achieved rather than promising that every stain or odour will disappear.

Can Pet Urine Be Removed from Rugs?

Rugs present their own challenges.

Unlike fitted carpet, rugs can be constructed from many different materials and using very different techniques.

These can include:

  • Wool
  • Cotton
  • Synthetic fibres
  • Viscose
  • Silk
  • Handmade rugs
  • Persian rugs
  • Oriental rugs

A valuable handmade wool rug, for example, shouldn’t automatically be treated in the same way as an inexpensive synthetic rug.

Pet urine can penetrate through the pile and into the rug’s foundation. If enough liquid reaches the underside, simply cleaning the surface may not address all of the contamination.

Specialist rug cleaning allows the cleaner to consider the rug’s construction, fibres, dyes and condition before deciding how it should be treated.

What About Old Pet Urine Stains?

Older stains can certainly be more challenging.

The longer urine remains within a material, the greater the opportunity for staining, odour and changes to the fibres or dyes.

Previous cleaning attempts can also affect the eventual result.

That doesn’t mean an old stain can’t be improved.

Professional treatment can often make a significant difference to older pet stains and odours, but complete removal can’t always be guaranteed.

If you’re unsure how old a stain is, tell your cleaner what you know and whether you’ve previously applied any products to it.

Why Does the Smell Sometimes Come Back?

This is one of the most frustrating things about pet urine.

You’ve cleaned the area. It smells better. Then a few days later — or during warm or humid weather — you notice it again.

Often, this is because contamination remains deeper within the material.

Surface cleaning may have removed what was on top without reaching everything underneath.

It can also happen when an area hasn’t dried thoroughly after cleaning.

Finding and treating the source of the odour is therefore more important than simply making the surface smell pleasant.

What Should You Do When Your Pet Has an Accident?

Acting quickly can make a big difference.

If your dog or cat has just had an accident on a rug or sofa:

Blot rather than scrub. Use a clean, absorbent white cloth or towel to absorb as much liquid as possible.

Don’t rub the area. Rubbing can spread the contamination and potentially damage the fibres.

Avoid soaking it with water. Excessive moisture can push the urine deeper.

Be cautious with household chemicals. Don’t start mixing different cleaning products or applying strong chemicals without knowing whether they’re suitable for the material.

Arrange professional treatment if necessary. This is particularly worthwhile for valuable rugs, delicate upholstery, large accidents, repeated contamination or persistent smells.

What If My Pet Keeps Returning to the Same Spot?

Dogs and cats have a much stronger sense of smell than we do.

Even when you can no longer detect an obvious odour, your pet may still recognise the area.

This is another reason why dealing with the source rather than simply disguising the smell is important.

Repeated accidents in exactly the same location can also mean contamination has penetrated further into the material over time, making professional assessment particularly worthwhile.

Is Professional Cleaning Worth It for Pet Owners?

If you have pets, professional cleaning can form part of maintaining your sofas, rugs and other soft furnishings.

Even without accidents, furniture and rugs gradually collect pet hair, dander, outdoor dirt and general odours.

Periodic professional cleaning can help remove this accumulated contamination while keeping your furnishings looking and feeling fresher.

How frequently cleaning is needed depends on the number of pets, how much they shed, whether they’re allowed on furniture and the amount of use your furnishings receive.
